The Budget last week included a commitment to “consult on introducing a new duty band for still cider just below 7.5% abv to target white ciders”. This decision follows local MP David Burrowes’ campaign request to consult on the duty on ‘white cider’ which contains the equivalent of 22 shots of vodka for the price of a cinema ticket.
Mr Burrowes has long-campaigned for a new band of duty to deal with the high sale of cheap super-strength alcohol which is often the drink of choice for those addicted to alcohol.
After the announcement, Mr Burrowes welcomed the commitment. He said: “Many Members on both sides of the House will know that white cider is particularly damaging to young people and homeless people, and the consultation is a great signal of intent that we will get to grips with the issue, so that we do not have this harmful, damaging and too-cheap white cider on our high streets and particularly in our off-licences”.
The North London Hospice is looking for at least two trustees to join its Board.
