Homelessness Reduction Bill

28th October 2016

Communities Minister Sajid Javid announced today that ministers will support the Homeless Reduction Private Members Bill when it reaches its second reading in the Commons on Friday.

David Burrowes, MP for Enfield Southgate, has welcomed the decision having taken a leading role in supporting the Bill.

Announcing the Government’s support for the Bill, Mr Javid said, ‘No one should have to sleep rough on the streets. We want to build a country that works for everyone, not just the privileged few. That's why we are determined to do all we can to help those who lose their homes and provide them with the support they need to get their lives back on track.’

The Bill seeks to place a duty on local authorities to intervene earlier to prevent homelessness. This legislation will stop local authorities requiring vulnerable people to prove a certain level of vulnerability, which currently leads many local authorities to only help those who have slept rough for at least one night.

Following the vote on Friday, Mr Burrowes will take part in a CEO Sleepout in partnership with the homeless charity DePaul UK. On 31stOctober, Mr Burrowes will sleep out at Lord’s Cricket Ground with other executives and politicians to raise awareness and funds for homeless people in London.

David said ‘I very much welcome the opportunity presented by the Homeless Reduction Bill to ensure Councils cooperate with health and social services to do more to prevent and reduce homelessness. It is a scandal that so many people sleep rough in London and we all need to help end vulnerable people having to sleep on the streets.’

Easter Newsletter

Apart from Cadbury's most people recognise Easter, particularly Christians as we remember the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. A dedicated holiday on Good Friday highlights our enduring Christian heritage. As for me I will have contrasting experiences of Easter. On Good Friday I will attend the Greek Orthodox service at St Demetrios Church and join with many hundred in procession around the church. On Saturday 22nd April at 7.30pm I will be taking part in a dramatic presentation at my church in Enfield (www.eefc.net) donning a wig and gown as a Defence Counsel in a case about the evidence for the Resurrection entitled 'Who moved the stone?'

I recognise my Jewish constituents are also celebrating a most significant time in their calendar remembering the Passover. For others it is simply a time to be with the family and eat lots of chocolate! However you will be celebrating Easter, I send you my best wishes.
